Passionate Engines: What Emotions Reveal About Mind and Artificial Intelligence
Published in Hardcover by Oxford University Press (February, 2002)
Author: Craig Delancey
Average review score:

A long overdue perspective on emotion
This book is just right in tone and content. Insightful, sensitively written, and important, it does the world a service by bringing to the public the central scientific work on the emotions, and carefully exploring what this work means for philophosy and the rest of us. Delancey's central conclusion, that our understanding of the mind should start with the question of how an organism can achieve autonomy in its environment rather than how to create "cognition", is compellingly argued. His is a welcome addition to the growing chorus of voices for that position.

One of a kind, and much needed
Craig Delancey has stepped up to the plate to take on a topic that, from fear or neglect, few others in the philosophy of mind have been willing to take a swing at. And he has hit the ball out of the park. His book is comprehensive, sensitive, and lucid, exploring the topic without the sentimentality that prevents progress or the hard-headedness that trivializes our emotional lives. In this thoughtful book, we see a compelling case made for why emotion is at the center of our mental lives, and why the best work in the science and philosophy of mind needs to be, and can be, critiqued in light of this pivotal fact. This book should change the way philosophers and cognitive scientists look at their own work going forward.

The Patent Process
Published in Paperback by John Wiley & Sons (15 December, 2001)
Author: Craig Hovey
Average review score:

Patents for entrepreneurs
One of the wonderful features of this book is in how it shows readers that it's the simple things they come up with, usually based on their own experience or expertise, that can be turned into the greatest success with a patent. You don't need to be a rocket scientist, just a guy like me who comes up with a better way to do something. The case studies were particularly helpful, ranging from profiles of a dot-com company with business method patents to a barbecue joint that has a sauce as a trade secret. I never thought I'd see a book written by a college professor that's actually interesting to read.

Worth reading even if you don't need a patent!
Who knew patents and intellectual property could be so interesting to read about? The examples of patents in here, like the method for preserving the dead, are a blast - and really serve to teach you something. You'll love the case studies, too. For those seeking patents, trademarks, trade secrets, or copyrights, what you need to know is laid right out. Other books on these subjects put you to sleep, this one is cool!

Pow/Mia America's Missing Men: The Men We Left Behind
Published in Hardcover by Starburst Publishers (November, 1995)
Authors: Chimp Robertson and Craig Berryman
Average review score:

A brilliant work on the POW/MIA issue.......
After having read many books on the POW/MIA subject, it was immediately clear to me that after reading "POW/MIA - America's Missing Men - The Men We Left Behind", this book is the definitive encyclopedia on the subject.

Covering World War 2, Korea, Vietnam, and the first Gulf War (with major emphasis on Vietnam), it is clear to see that this book is exceptionally well researched and compiled.

Among some of the superb material is major statistics of the Vietnam war, a huge list of unaccounted for U.S. servicemen with supporting intelligence information, and a timeline overview through the years that shows exactly what has been accomplished by the United States, Vietnam, Cambodia, and Laos concerning the continuing POW/MIA issue.

Finishing off the book are 126 riveting photographs of American servicemen held in captivity. These photos, not easy to look at, are heart wrenching in their portrayal of the pain, suffering, and hardship suffered by our servicemen.

For the best possible material on POW/MIA's (predominantly in Vietnam), this is the book for you. It comes hugely recommended to everyone interested in this material.

A book about the real hero!
Over a period of time reviewing books has it perks. I get to choose my topics and read what I like. Chimp Robertson has made it easy to be a reviewer with this book POW/MIA America's Missing Men.

One of the most controversial subjects in U.S. History is the MIAs and POWs, and this book uncovers the truth about what really happened to those men. I was deeply moved by the enormous tragedy of the whole thing.

Not written in storybook fashion, this book you'll read gripping tales of horrific conditions by those that lived the nightmare and returned to talk about it. You'll also read about those that were as fortunate.

Most impressive was the way the book is detailed and well researched. Even more impressive is the work the author is doing to help bring back those still left behind. This book should be dedicated to the real heroes of the Vietnam War - the soldiers.

A well written book--a nice resource
The book is a great resourse for beginners. The book has an excellent introduction on client/server technology and object-oriented programming. The authors did an excellent job to keep it simple and easy to follow at the same time very effectively explained some very complicated concepts. Though the scope is introduction to PowerBuilder but it can be a good read for experienced programmers. The book also has a tutorial that gives a more hands on approach. I enjoyed the book very much and do recommend to anybody thinking to learn PowerBuilder.

The Random House Book of Nursery Stories (Random House Book of)
Published in Library Binding by Random Library (10 October, 2000)
Author: Helen Craig
Average review score:

Great first anthology of nursery stories
My two and a half year old daughter loves this book. It contains ten of the classics: Little Red Riding Hood, Goldilocks, the Three Little Pigs, The Gingerbread Man etc. The author has carefully toned down the potential for graphic and violent endings in some of these stories so they are suitable for the very youngest. Red Riding Hood and her Grandma do not get eaten by the wolf for example and the woodcutter "knocked the wolf down with his ax" and that's as far as the description goes.

I started out reading my daughter "Goldilocks" and "The Little Red Hen" but she soon wanted to hear all the stories complete with crafty foxes and wolves. The back cover has a list of all the titles with small illustrations and she loves to choose which three stories she will hear each night. The pictures and text are perfect for a first introduction to read aloud classics.

Great for tots
I had been looking for a good fairy tale book for my 2 1/2 year old and this is it! The word to picture ratio is great and the stories are told simply and clearly without losing content and charm. The illustrations are wonderful. There is a particularly clever one dipicting the lengthy path traveled by Little Red Riding Hood, as opposed to the Wolf's shortcut to Granny's house. The table of contents has a picture from each story next to the title so my daughter is able to choose the story she wants to hear just by looking. It has some classic nursery stories plus of couple that were new to me - cool!

The Rebirth of the Missouri Pacific, 1956-1983
Published in Hardcover by Texas A&M University Press (December, 1984)
Author: H. Craig Miner
Average review score:

A logistics major must have !
I read this book years ago and find it quite interesting. Many of the concepts in this books were explained in my transportation class. Mopac was an very important rail line in the Southwest and many of the present day U.P. Managers (i.e. Dick Davidson) came from this railroad. I hope people can draw the history and basic concepts to understand present day railroad operations.

A superb work on recent railroad history
This book gives a good look at the forces that shaped the Missouri Pacific Railroad during its final era, from job forces, line acquisitions and locomotives to corporate doings and "pleasing the stockholders." It also includes excellent black-and-white photographs and informative maps. Despite the fact that I am primarily a Missouri-Kansas-Texas Railroad fan, I still found this book to be extremely interesting and thorough. It reads quickly, presenting the information in a concise, well-organized manner. I highly recommend this book to any railroad fan who is interested in the history of railroads, particularly that of the "MoPac" and its closest rail competitors.

Rehabilitation of the Spine: A Practitioner's Manual
Published in Hardcover by Lippincott, Williams & Wilkins (15 January, 1996)
Author: Craig Liebenson
Average review score:

Chiropractic and rehabilitation are a natural fit!
This book includes the core materials from which Dr. Liebenson crafted LACC's 3 year rehabilitation diplomate program. I attended the program here in Chicago (96 to 99), and found this book to be an invaluable supplement to those materials.

Each chapter is written by a specialist in that topic, and includes outcome assessment, Janda's assessment of muscular imbalance, the McKenzie technique, and the numerous chapters on active treatment protocols. The sections on self-stretches, patient education, and especially Chapter 18, the "Active Rehab Protocols" will take you step-by-step in analysis and management of a wide spectrum of complaints from acute to chronic.

The only thing that could be better would be the next edition, or by taking the 30 classes from LACC. This book is a must for every pracitioner who wants to improve their results with the variety of disorders that present to us each day. Enjoy!

A quintessential guide for chiropractic physicians
Dr. Liebenson's book is an excellent compilation of research and expert opinion for the care of spinal and extremity related disorders. It gives the practitioner a resource to utilize for difficult as well as simple cases of musculoskeletal dysfunction that plagues millions of americans each year. The guidelines of care move from the passive (traditional chiropractic manipulation and physiological therapeutics) to the active (progressive rehabilitive exercises and patient education) in order to restore optimal functional mobility to the patient.

As a senior chiropractic intern, I have taken a rehabilitation course at Logan College of Chiropractic that uses this text as its core reference. Additionally, I have integrated the scientific principles given and have seen my patients respond well.

This text is a must for the chiropractic physician.
